How Often Should You Have a Diabetic Foot Exam?

July 28, 2026, 10:01 AM
At All Valley Podiatric Group in Fresno, CA, Dr. Anoosh Moadab and our team help patients use regular foot examinations to prevent small concerns from becoming serious complications. Diabetes can reduce sensation, impair circulation, and slow healing. Consistent diabetic foot care allows us to detect changes early, protect healthy tissue, and address problems before they interfere with mobility.

Schedule at Least One Exam Each Year

Most people with diabetes should receive a comprehensive foot exam at least once a year, even when their feet feel normal. Nerve damage can reduce the ability to feel heat, pressure, cuts, or blisters, so pain does not always provide an early warning. During an exam, we inspect the skin and nails, check circulation, assess foot structure, and test sensation with tools such as a monofilament. Yearly comprehensive examinations help identify neuropathy, blood-flow problems, and pressure areas before they lead to ulcers or infections.

Some Patients Need More Frequent Visits

We may recommend appointments every three to six months when a patient has neuropathy, poor circulation, a foot deformity, recurring calluses, or a previous ulcer. Active wounds, infections, recent surgery, or a history of amputation require closer monitoring. Dr. Moadab may also schedule visits about every six weeks when patients need ongoing professional nail care, callus management, or regular checks of high-pressure areas.
Do not wait for a scheduled visit when you notice a blister, cut, redness, swelling, drainage, skin discoloration, an ingrown toenail, or a sore that does not begin healing. Tingling, burning, numbness, and changes in foot temperature also warrant prompt evaluation.

Protect Your Feet Between Appointments

Daily habits strengthen professional diabetic foot care. We recommend checking the tops, soles, heels, and spaces between the toes every day. Wash with warm water, dry carefully, and avoid applying moisturizer between the toes. Wear clean socks and properly fitted shoes, even indoors, and check each shoe for rough seams or objects before putting it on. Never cut corns or calluses at home.
