Ingrown Toenail Surgery: What to Expect Before, During, and After Treatment

April 29, 2026, 12:00 AM
At All Valley Podiatric Group in Fresno, CA, we treat ingrown toenails when home care no longer works or when pain, swelling, drainage, or infection starts interfering with daily life. Dr. Anoosh Moadab helps patients understand their options clearly, including when a minor in-office procedure is the best way to stop the problem from coming back. Many cases begin with pressure, redness, throbbing pain, or drainage around the nail edge, often after improper trimming, trauma, naturally curved nails, or tight shoes.

What Happens Before Surgery

Before we recommend surgery, we examine the toe carefully and determine how severe the ingrown nail is. We look for infection, drainage, skin overgrowth, and whether the problem affects one side of the nail or both. Mild cases may improve with soaking, topical care, footwear changes, and protecting the toe. Surgery becomes more appropriate when the nail keeps growing into the skin, the area becomes infected, or walking and wearing shoes becomes painful.

What to Expect During The Procedure

Ingrown toenail surgery is usually a minor procedure performed with local anesthetic to numb the toe. Once the toe is numb, we remove either the ingrown edge of the nail or, in some cases, the entire nail if the condition is more extensive or recurrent. Many procedures for recurrent ingrown nails also include treatment of the nail matrix so that the painful portion does not grow back. Partial nail removal is common because it solves the pressure problem while leaving the rest of the nail in place. The procedure itself is typically brief, and most patients go home the same day.

What Recovery Looks Like

After treatment, we place a dressing over the toe and give instructions for keeping the area clean and protected. Mild soreness, drainage, and tenderness can occur for a short time afterward, but patients usually return to light daily activity quickly. Recovery depends on whether we remove only part of the nail or the full nail. Daily dressing care, roomy footwear, and avoiding unnecessary pressure on the toe help the area heal properly.

Why Prompt Treatment Matters

Untreated ingrown toenails can worsen and lead to more pain, swelling, and infection. Prompt care helps protect the toe, reduce recurrence, and restore comfort with walking and shoes. At All Valley Podiatric Group in Fresno, CA, Dr. Anoosh Moadab provides experienced treatment for ingrown toenails and other foot conditions with a focus on lasting relief.
